Small budget: start with SEO or Google Ads?
A simple way to decide, depending on your sector, your budget and how fast you need new clients.
You have a website, a limited budget, and you want more clients. Should you invest in SEO (appearing in Google's free results) or in Google Ads (paying to appear at the top)? It's one of the questions we hear most often. There is no universal answer, but there is a simple way to decide.
The difference in one sentence
- SEO is like building a house: it takes time, but once it's built, you live in it without paying rent for each visit.
- Google Ads is like renting: you're in immediately, but as soon as you stop paying, you're out.
Both bring visitors from Google. What changes is the speed, the cost over time and how long the effect lasts.
When Google Ads are the better start
Ads make sense first if:
- you need clients quickly: a new business, a quiet season, a new service to launch
- your clients search with urgency: emergency plumber, locksmith, towing, last-minute bookings
- your competition already dominates the free results and you need time to catch up
- you want to test which services or areas bring the most requests before investing in content
With a well-built campaign, you can receive your first enquiries within days. The key word is "well-built": precise keywords, a limited geographic area, ads that match what people search, and a page that converts the click into a call.
Quick tip: with a small budget, target fewer keywords and a smaller area. It's better to be very visible on 10 searches than invisible on 200.
When SEO is the better start
SEO makes sense first if:
- you can wait a few months for results
- your clients research before buying: coaching, renovation, accounting, wedding services
- you work locally and your Google Business Profile is not yet optimised (that's the quickest SEO win)
- your budget is very tight: the basics of SEO (titles, service pages, Google profile, reviews) cost more time than money
The effect of SEO builds up. A good service page written today can still bring clients in two or three years.
The combination that works for most SMEs
In practice, many small businesses get the best results by combining both, in this order:
- Fix the basics first: a clear, fast website, one page per service, good titles, a complete Google Business Profile. Without this, even ads perform badly because the visitor doesn't find what they need.
- Launch a small, targeted Google Ads campaign to get enquiries now, and learn which searches bring real clients.
- Use what you learn to create SEO content on the searches that convert best.
- Reduce the ad budget gradually as your free rankings improve, keeping ads only where they remain profitable.
How to know if it works
Whatever you choose, measure what matters: not the number of visitors, but the number of calls, forms and bookings. Set up conversion tracking from day one. A campaign that brings 50 visitors and 5 calls is better than one that brings 500 visitors and none.
In short
- Need results this month: start with Google Ads, small and targeted
- Can wait and want lasting results: start with SEO
- Best for most SMEs: solid basics, small ads campaign, then SEO on what converts
- Always measure enquiries, not just traffic
